Painted Power - Andy Eccleshall

The sheer awesomeness of nature can leave us all breathless from time to time and more often if we're lucky. These awe-inspiring scenes can take us out of ourselves leaving only wonder behind. Artist Andy Eccleshall captures these scenes in a remarkably poignant way. Native Stafford, Englishman, fine artist, muralist, and now Northwest resident, Eccleshall brings striking new works to Cole Gallery on October 21st.

Bold contrasts and heavy light cascade throughout Andy's pieces bringing a drama to his work many cannot capture using a paint medium. His work showcases nature's unsurpassed power and man's attempt to match it. We see this brilliantly depicted in "Storm II". Our eyes instantly take in the massive force of the sun hitting a giant storm cloud as it rolls through. It's not until a moment later that we notice electric polls running down the plain on the bottom right. Man's construct of power seems almost silly when put side by side with nature. "The Northwest is abundant with examples," Eccleshall explains, "Its rugged and beautiful scenery dominates everything and changes constantly. There is a never ending supply of inspiration."

At 16 Andy was already being paid for his artistic abilities producing architectural prints and painting landscapes in the UK. He graduated with a degree in Illustration and continued on that career path for a bit until moving to the US as a muralist. "I never stopped painting," Andy said, "It's been a long and fascinating road of personal discovery, learning from mistakes, and growing to understand who I truly am as an artist."

Andy supports his wife and son through the sale of his art and now resides in Edmonds, WA. You can see one of his murals on 4^th and Main in downtown Edmonds.

A Family Affair

Sun drenched sunflowers, sail boats resting at bay, and simple treasured moments shared with loved ones are just a few of mother daughter Susan and Jennifer Diehl's favorite things. Teaming up from Arizona and Oregon respectively, the Diehl's bring an unbelievable show of still lifes, landscapes, and people, to Cole Gallery from September 16^th^th. through October 20

Both Susan and Jennifer believe art to be a communication from painter to audience. Jennifer drawing from nostalgia and Susan from the beauty she has seen in her travels abroad and at home in her own garden. Both fill their work with a unique perspective on their visual experiences using impressionist brush strokes filled with color and depth. "I am an optimist who paints from a place of joy," Susan said, "I hope to bring a little of that into the lives of those who view my work."

Their works bring more than just visual appreciation; one actually feels the experience and moment of each piece. "I am saying with paint, 'this is what I have seen and felt'," Susan tells. As a viewer you can feel the summer sun warming your soul and the soft breeze tickling the back of your neck. "Life is simple and beautiful," Jennifer explains, "I want people to feel that in my work."

Truly a family affair, established and award winning artists Susan and her husband Doug created a space for their daughter Jennifer to flourish as her own unique artist. At just 18, a renowned gallery in Arizona began carrying Jennifer Diehl's work. Today, they often paint together when visiting one another and continue to inspire each other.

Hollywood Art Walk

The Hollywood Art Walk features local Art, Music and Wine.

Thursday, September 23rd, the "Hollywood Art Walk" in Woodinville Wine Country will come to life between 5pm and 8pm when many of the Hollywood district businesses stay open late to host local artists. Enjoy live music at Willow's Lodge and taste Washington wine at the participating winery venues.

Gallery 113 will feature the unique mosaic art of Crystal Thomas.

Willows Lodge will feature Larry Hysmith; and the tasting room of Covey Run at Apple Farm Village will display the works of DuVall artist Ken Sharp while Zerba's tasting room will feature watercolors by Lynn Fleming. Otis Kenyon will show the work of Deb Crawford. Pat Hitchen's art is on display at Vineyards Salon, Gretchen Scott Salon is showing the photography and watercolors of Eden Hopkins, Cedar and Sage Massage is showing watercolors by Amanda Schuster. New location, Dusted Valley Tasting Room will be showing Kirkland artist Carol Pierce.

SVAC Still Life Studio Sessions to Begin October 14th on Thursday mornings, 9:30 to 12:30

Wednesday, October 6th, 9:30am-12:30pm
at SVAC, 14545 148th Ave NE, Woodinville

Open Studio Sessions are cancelled through the month of September, but are restarting October 6 and will be held weekly at Gallery 113 on Wednesday mornings at 9:30am to 12:30pm. Each session is a long pose with a different live clothed model. Sessions are open to the public.

Session fees are $10 per session or $32 per month paid in advance with SVAC membership, $12 per session for non-members.

Artist placement for viewing is based upon a first come basis. Artists must provide their own easel. Restrictions may apply regarding medium/method when painting and pastel drawing to protect the health of the other painters. When using pastel, use a wet towel to catch the particles and limit blowing the painting. Oil painting medium must only use Gamsol and/or linseed oil as thinner and always close the top/cap on the container when not used.

Alden Mason's (born in Everett, WA 1919) experimentation with watercolors and oil, alternating between abstract and figurative styles (with a touch of folk-art), gained him national and international recognition.

Steve Klein's unique, exploratory approach to kiln working creates a wide variety of imagery in his work. He uses shape, color, line, texture, and the incomparable reflection of light that only glass can provide.

Karen Simonson begins with acrylics then swithches to oil, letting the under-painting serve as a base for exploration of shapes and forms.

Cunningham in the Northwest

The Cornish Main Gallery begins the 2010/2011 season with Cunningham in the Northwest, an interdisciplinary art exhibition that explores the connections between the groundbreaking work of legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham and his hometown region. The first art exhibition to look at Cunningham’s work within the context of the Pacific Northwest, Cunningham in the Northwest celebrates his legacy of collaboration and examines how his relationship to Cornish and the Northwest informed his philosophies and the work he created.

Music, print, film, photography, painting, drawing, installation work and live performances are all part of the exhibition, and include work by John Cage, Northwest Master William Cumming, photographer Barbara Morgan, Seattle sound artist Trimpin, Andy Warhol, and Merce himself, among others.

From the Curators: “Using elements of Merce’s dances as guidelines, we created an exhibition that viewers could experience in the way they might experience a Cunningham performance. In other words, Cunningham in the Northwest is less a presentation about his work and more an experience of the work. In creating this experience, we are asking ourselves, ‘What would one of his performances look like if it was opened up and the ingredients separated out?’

Legacies in Print brings together print work from Oaxaca, Mexico and Cornish’s Mary Alice Cooley Print Collection. The exhibition features work by established Oaxaqueno printmakers Shinzaburo Takeda, Sergio Hernandez, Enrique Flores, Ferando Olivera, Israel Nazario, Lorena Guerra, and Fulgencio Lazo; and Cooley Collection artists Jeffry Mitchell, Ben Beres (AR ’00), Dawn Cerny (AR ’01), Molly Norris (AR ’01), Joey Katzer (AR ’00), Rickie Wolfe (AR ’00), Junko Yamamoto (AR ’99), and others. Curated by Seattle curator Peggy Weiss for the Seattle Oaxaca Connection organization, this combined exhibition was created in an effort to strengthen the international creative alliance between Seattle and Oaxaca, and sets the stage for future exchanges between U.S. and Mexican artists.

Aspira Apartment Tower opens new art gallery on ground floor

New gallery will feature four of Seattle’s most nationally recognizable collections

The brand-new Aspira Apartment Tower located on the corner of Terry Avenue and Stewart Street in downtown Seattle this month opened The Gallery at Aspira, currently featuring artwork from Seattle’s James Harris Gallery, including pieces from Beth Campbell, Claire Cowie, Nicholas Nyland, Mary Ann Peters, Amir Zaki and Yunhee Min.

“We are excited to open The Gallery at Aspira and continue our commitment to the artists of the Pacific Northwest,” said Ron Merritt, Principle, Keller CMS, Aspira’s Developer. “The gallery offers our residents as well as the local community a buoyant, inviting, urban location to view some of the region’s most spectacular artwork.”

The new gallery, located on the ground floor of the apartment tower, will feature a rotating collection of artwork from four of Seattle’s most nationally recognized galleries. Each gallery will provide works from their collection of artists for a three month rotating exhibition. The current exhibition which runs from July 22 through October 16, 2010, a reflection of both figurative and abstract images, is titled Summer and showcases pieces from the James Harris Gallery in Seattle.

Art of the Garden Opens July 8th

Find Art for your Garden at July 8th Exhibit Opening

If you think artwork is just meant to hang on a wall or sit on a shelf be prepared to toss this idea aside as the Arts Council of Snohomish County presents a perennial favorite, the Art of the Garden, from July 8th through August 19th.

More than forty artists will showcase their work as part of this prolific offering of art created to enhance the garden and bring the garden into the home. Opening July 8th with an artists’ reception from 5-8pm, this exhibit will include colorful work in a wide variety of media including ceramic, cement casting, glass, photographs, paintings and sculpture suitable for the indoors or out. Visitors will find artwork to personalize even the smallest landscape with the whimsy and grace, as well as structural pieces to define garden spaces long after the flowers have faded.

For those wondering how to turn their garden into a gallery Lloyd Glasscock of Pacific Stone Company offers these tips for adding artful touches to your beds, pots, and plantings:

Be careful about upstaging unique plants or showy planting beds with the art. Showy art is best used in weaker areas of the garden where it can be the star.
Is there a theme to the art? A random collection of statuary can be whimsical or haphazard depending on one’s point of view.
Color is important when thinking of how the art blends or contrasts with the surroundings. Is it pleasing to the eye?

Of course artwork exposed to the elements may also need some extra protection for which Glasscock suggests making sure “artwork is far enough into the garden beds that it won’t easily be knocked over” and that, “covers may be required to protect certain pieces from winter freezes.”

Harvest of Art, which will be held on Saturday, September 25

C.A.A. (Camano Arts Association) announces sponsorship of their second annual art event, Harvest of Art, which will be held on Saturday, September 25, and Sunday, September 26, 2010 between 10:00 AM-5:00 PM at Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center Public Hall, 102nd Ave N.W. Stanwood, WA.

This is a judged and juried show. All artists from Western Washington are invited to submit their work. The theme - Farms, Fields, and Foliage. Over $1,000 worth of awards will be presented to winning artists. Featured will be beautiful works of art from over 40 artists, painters, and photographers displaying sculptures, glass, ceramic, mixed media, and jewelry. C.A.A. artists will also showcase their artwork. For more information about submitting art, please contact chair: Pamela Searcy at 206 915-4663.

The show is open to the public and an ideal venue to meet the artists, discover special treasures or find those one of a kind gifts.

Harvest of Art is part of the Harvest Jubilee which will take place at the same time. Taking its name and inspiration from Stanwood's 1930's era annual fall festival, the 2010 Harvest Jubilee highlights agriculture past and present, with an eye to preserving farms and farmland for future generations. Visitors can enjoy live music, farm tours, hay rides, exhibits, demonstrations, hands-on craft activities, fine art and so much more for the whole family. It's a discovery of the agricultural richness of the northwest corner of Snohomish County and Camano Island where the farms are many, the people friendly, and the food fantastic.

Admission to the art show is FREE.

SEATTLE ARTIST MARTY GORDON FEATURED IN MASTERS: COLLAGE

Seattle artist Marty Gordon is one of 40 artists featured in Lark Books newest publication, Masters: Collage. The book is available in at online and in stores.

Gordon draws on a diverse artistic background that includes experience in writing, theater and printmaking to make his clever collages. A former minister, Gordon now devotes his time to collage making. He uses his art as a forum for asking questions, inviting debate, and telling stories. He also uses it as a platform for exploring spirituality and religious faith, areas in which he has personally struggled. Blending sophisticated humor with a comic visual style, he has developed his own unique genre of collage. Gordon lives in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, with his wife, Sarah, who is also an artist. He exhibits regularly around Seattle. Masters: Collage features a breathtaking mix of techniques from traditional cut-and-paste to digital to collage with paint or encaustic, and styles ranging from wildly playful and colorful to evocative, almost monochrome images. 16th Annual Artists’ Garage Sale is June 5th

Spring, is finally in the air - and that means that it's time for artists to clean out their studios and start afresh. If you're looking for a good deal on some great art, or are an artist in need of some art supplies be sure to mark your calendars for the 16th Annual Artists' Garage Sale on June 5th from 9am - 3pm in downtown Everett.

Almost 100 artists will be participating at this year's new location, the Schack Art Center at 2921 Hoyt Avenue. The garage sale will be held inside on the first floor of the yet to be completed art center building, and along Hoyt Avenue between Wall Street and Hewitt Avenue.

Even though the location is new there will still be a fabulous selection of artwork including watercolors, oils, pastels, acrylics, glass, found objects, cards, sculpture, ceramics, photography, garden art and much more. Seconds, old stock, new stock – all at garage sale prices.

The local business community is looking forward to having the Garage Sale crowd downtown. Josey Wise co-owner of WiseDesignz framing and gallery noted, “We have a strong arts community in Everett and having the Garage Sale downtown hopefully will bring more people to Everett and let them see how great our artists and businesses are.”

Come rain or shine, there will be lots of fun and something for everyone!

Hollywood Art Walk in Woodinville Wine Country on May 27th

WOODINVILLE – The Sammamish Valley Arts Center (SVAC), in conjunction with local sponsoring businesses, is starting a long awaited, and much anticipated, monthly Art Walk in the Hollywood District of Woodinville.

On May 27^th, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, SVAC artists will be at several locations throughout this vibrant and popular section of Woodinville, sharing their original works and discussing their techniques and inspirations with art enthusiasts, collectors and visitors. Initially, the SVAC expects 10 – 15 locations to participate and, as the program grows and gains attention from neighboring cities, they plan to have over 30 businesses on the map, with the potential for hundreds of new visitors each month.

“We look forward to showcasing our fascinating tourist district to the community, and visitors, as we celebrate the arts and enjoy the unique atmosphere that we have to offer,” said Barbara Kelson, Executive Director of the SVAC and owner of Apple Farm Village. “It’s a great opportunity for our greater Woodinville area residents to come out and spend an evening shopping, wine tasting, dining and enjoying the arts with friends and family.”

The Art Walk will be held on the 4^th Thursday of each month, with the first one taking place on May 27^th. With all of the exceptional wine tasting rooms, restaurants and unique stores so conveniently located together, the SVAC and the partnering businesses expect this to become one of Woodinville’s great success stories. You can obtain a map of participating locations and, the artists displaying their work, from the businesses at Apple Farm Village (near the new roundabouts) or, from the Hollywood District participants. Janet Hamilton selected as Poster Artist for Fresh Paint 2010

The Arts Council of Snohomish County (ACSC) has selected Janet Hamilton as the 2010 Poster Artist for the Fresh Paint: Festival of Artists at Work. Now in its 14th year, Fresh Paint fills the entire length of the Everett Marina with artists creating, selling, and demonstrating art. From drawing and painting to pottery and weaving, Fresh Paint has unique gifts and fine art from more than 100 artists.

Janet Hamilton resides in Everett, but grew up in Kansas and studied under the mentorship of Robert Sudlow (The "Monet of the midwest") at the University of Kansas where she learned to love the challenge and rewards of painting the landscape "plein aire". In her own artwork Janet works to capture the subtlest colors and atmosphere of a place. Whether painting clouds, trees, buildings or water, her attention is on the way light touches each form in a beautiful way and on the patterns that are created by light and shadow.

“I've been selling my art at the Art's Council's Fresh Paint Festival ever since it started and I'm very excited to be doing the poster for it this year. I'm so glad the Arts Council has created this festival for the local people to walk along the marina and peruse all kinds of artists doing their thing. It's always a fun and interesting weekend in Everett - and I am going to enjoy every minute of it,” Hamilton said.

Janet teaches weekly pastel painting classes and is a member of the Northwest Pastel Society, the Women Painters of Washington, the Pastel Society of America, and the American Society of Marine Artists. She was also the Arts Council of Snohomish County’s Artist of the Year in 2001.

ARC Dance presents five world premiers by choreographers Penny

Street Dance Chicago), and Kiyon Gaines (PNB) in a July 15-17 program
at Seattle Center's Leo K. Theatre.

?The annual summer performances are a wonderful opportunity for locals
and tourists alike to see that we have a vital dance community
operating all year long in Seattle,? said Artistic Director Marie
Chong. ?The Bagley Wright/Leo K. is a perfect fit for ARC Dance, and

A King County 4Culture grant helps ARC give back to the community
during difficult economic conditions by partially covering the cost of

Art of Asia Opens May 6th, 5-8pm

Exhibit runs through June 24th

The Arts Council presents The Art of Asia, an exhibit featuring art and objects inspired by the traditional and contemporary art and culture of Asia.

The exhibit is also part of the Arts Council’s Art Education in Action program, which allows almost two thousand children grades 4th through 8th to tour the exhibit for several weeks starting May 7th. Field trips include a docent led tour, as well as an opportunity to observe artists-in-action and participate in a hands-on art activity. ("Florida Lychi", Yuming Zhu)

4th Art Alternatives Book Now Available

In March 2010 the Arts Council released "Possible Creature Questions" the fourth in a series of books written and illustrated through Art Alternatives, a program for incarcerated youth in partnership with Denney Juvenile Justice Center and the Everett School District.

Community response to “Possible Creature Questions” has led to a second printing so each kindergarten and first grade student in Snohomish County will receive a book. Henri Wilson, art instructor and founder of the program notes that, “when Sharon and I initially introduce the project by showing our students the previous books they will say, ‘People in Denney made those?’ We really believe that the books keep getting better because they are inspired and drawn upward by the achievements of their peers.”

Since the first book, "A Possible Day on a Farm," was released in 2003, thousands of copies have been distributed through community organizations. "Possible Creature Questions," which features Spanish translations, is also available for $5 in the Arts Council Gallery Store.

Black & White Photography Awards & Exhibit

Congratulations to Elizabeth Dikhtyar, a junior at Cascade High School, who is the Grand Prize winner in the 2010 Black & White Photography Contest for her entry "Self Portrait" (at right). Elizabeth's entry was selected from more than 150 student submissions representing 12 high schools in Snohomish County. Jurors commented that her piece is an, "evocative and moody self portrait, which draws you into the photo."

The top award winning pieces will be on display in the Arts Council Gallery Store from April 29 - May 15. All entries including duplicates of the top award winning pieces are on display at the Future of Flight from April 22 – May 20. Hours are 8:30am-5:30pm daily. Admission to the the Future of Flight is not required to view the exhibit.

I wanted to let you know that we're having a Closing Reception for the current exhibit at Ghost Gallery next Friday, May 7th from 6-9pm.

This show has been really special, since it features over 25 artists that I've worked with since the beginning of Ghost Gallery project in 2006.

The Art of Asia Exhibit Opens May 6th

The Arts Council of Snohomish County presents The Art of Asia, an exhibit featuring art and objects inspired by the traditional and contemporary art and culture of Asia including China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Opening Thursday, May 6th with an artist’s reception from 5-8pm, the exhibit will include paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, basketry, weavings, sculptures, and textiles. This exhibit is funded in part by grants from the Washington State Arts Commission and The Bank of America Charitable Foundation.

The exhibit is also part of the Arts Council’s Art Education in Action program, which allows almost two thousand children grades 4 - 8 to tour the exhibit for several weeks starting May 10th. Fieldtrips last 75 minutes and include a docent led tour, as well as the opportunity to observe artists-in-action and participate in a hands-on art activity related to the exhibit’s theme. The field trips are generously sponsored by Target, Inc., and U.S. Bancorp Foundation.

Admission to all exhibits is free to the public. The gallery is located at 1507 Wall Street in downtown Everett. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10-5pm and on Saturday from 11-4pm.

"A REALLY BIG SHOW OF MINIATURE PROPORTIONS" - Parklane Gallery hosts its 18th Annual International Miniature Art Show. With over 300 works of art on display from places as far away as Iran, this is not your ordinary art show and these are not just small works of art. Miniature painters comply with a strict standard of rules that apply to balance of scale, technique, color and detail as well as to size. A work of fine art in miniature draws the viewer in to further explore details of the painting's rendering. In fact, magnifyinig glasses are provided and closer looks are encouraged at Parklane Gallery.

Presenting the awards for this year's show are Wes and Rachelle Siegrist. The Siegrists have exhibited in over 500 art shows, galleries and museums and have received hundreds of awards between them for their exquisit art, including miniatures. Works by the Siegrists will also be on display at the Parklane Miniature show.

Black & White Photography Contest Honors Local High School Students

The Arts Council of Snohomish County received more than 150 entries for the 2010 Black & White Photography Contest, which was sponsored by King Size Imaging. The contest was open to all Snohomish County High School students. Photographs were judged in two categories, traditional analog prints and digital output prints. Kelly Atkinson and Stacey Green, two local well-known photographers, served as judges.

Artists’ Garage Sale Moves to Everett

Everett, WA (April 19, 2010) — After fifteen years of bargain hunting in Mukilteo the Arts Council of Snohomish County is moving the 16th annual Artists’ Garage Sale to downtown Everett.

The event was previously held at Rosehill Community Center in the old town district of Mukilteo, but with construction beginning on a new community center last September the Arts Council needed to find a new home for this beloved event. As it turns out the best home is their new home, the Schack Art Center at 2921 Hoyt Avenue.

The Arts Council is scheduled to begin tenant improvements on the Schack Art Center this summer. For now the bright, open interior will provide the perfect space for artists who want to set up tables inside and wider aisles for art lovers to wander. Outside artists will line their booths along the block of Hoyt Ave. between Hewitt Ave. and Wall St., which will be closed off for the event.

Even though the location is new the purpose of the event remains the same – helping artists clean out their studios and start fresh. If you are looking for a good deal on artwork or art supplies mark your calendar for Saturday June 5th, 9am – 3pm. There will be more than 80 artists offering seconds, as well as old and new stock including watercolors, oils, pastels, acrylics, glass, found objects, sculpture, ceramics, photography, garden art and much more – all at fabulous prices.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the national nonprofit organization that runs The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, will honor these students on June 9, 2010, at a gala celebration at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Selected award recipients and high school seniors recognized with top honors for portfolios will have their art/writing exhibited in Manhattan at the World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery in Lower Manhattan from June 9-25.

These students join the ranks of some of our country’s most revered artists and writers who have received Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in the past, including Robert Redford, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, John Lithgow, Bernard Malamud, Joyce Carol Oates, Tom Otterness, Philip Pearlstein, Zac Posen, Sylvia Plath, Richard Avedon, and Robert Indiana.

The first level of recognition for these students’ outstanding work took place through the Arts Council of Snohomish County, one of 96 affiliate organizations nationwide that, in partnership with the Alliance, conduct The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. In January, 503 entries were submitted locally and of those, 123 received Gold Key Awards. Gold and Silver Key Award Recipients were honored on February 22 at the Everett Civic Auditorium. That same evening, the exhibit opening which showcased all pieces submitted was held at the Historic Monte Cristo Gallery. Over 500 students, teachers, and families attended the awards ceremony and nearly 1,500 people visited the gallery over the 8 day exhibition. To view the local gold recipients please click here.

“Students whose work is entered in the Scholastic Art Awards experience a sense of pride of accomplishment. When their work is awarded for outstanding artistic achievement they are often overwhelmed yet encouraged by the public validation of their artistic passion. Many of my students have chosen to attend art colleges and launch their professional art careers because of a single art award recognition,” noted Gail Merrick, Graphic Arts & AP Studio Art at Stanwood High School.

After receiving awards locally, the work of these students was evaluated by an esteemed panel of jurors in New York City, alongside thousands of entries from other regional affiliate programs across the country. Open House Opportunities for Schack Art Center

Everett, WA (April 9, 2010) — Starting next week the Arts Council of Snohomish County is inviting the community to tour the Schack Art Center before beginning interior construction. Wednesday, April 14 at 4pm will be the first of four Open House opportunities to walk through the facility. Targeted to open in late 2010, the center will include a complete hot shop, cold-working shop, sandblasting and warm shop studio, exhibit space, retail gallery store and multi-purpose art studios.

Artists have already started moving into the Artspace lofts on the upper floors of the building, but interior construction is scheduled to start this summer on the Arts Council’s tenant improvements. The capital campaign for the Schack Art Center still needs $750,000 — and $500,000 of that must be raised by June 1st so that the Arts Council can qualify to receive a “Challenge Grant” of $400,000 from the Kresge Foundation.

Art Alternatives Program Releases Latest Preschool Book

Everett, WA (April 8, 2010) — In March 2010 the Arts Council of Snohomish County released “Possible Creature Questions” the fourth in series of books written and illustrated through Art Alternatives a program for incarcerated youth in partnership with Denney Juvenile Justice Center and the Everett School District. Previous book releases include "A Possible Day on a Farm" in 2003, "A Possible Night of Dreams" in 2006, and “Possible Sights Around the World” in 2008.

At the start of each the project, youth inmates choose a theme, collaborate on text and decorate paper with paint and texture. From the decorated paper they create illustrations using a process of torn or cut paper collage. Henri Wilson, art instructor and founder of the program notes that, “when we initially introduce the project by showing our students the previous books they will say, ‘People in Denney made those?’ We really believe that the books keep getting better because they are inspired and drawn upward by the achievements of their peers.”

“Possible Creature Questions” features animals and sea life worldwide; and includes Spanish translations. Since the first book was released in 2003, thousands of copies have been distributed through community organizations including: Snohomish County Early Childhood Education & Assistance Programs, Snohomish County Health District, Providence and Harborview Medical Centers, Volunteers of America, Little Red School House, Sherwood Community Services, and Housing Hope.

Reports from parents, grandparents, and staff at community organizations confirm that the books offer a rewarding experience on many levels as children respond not only to the text, but the illustrations. Gina Veloni, Program Manager at the Snohomish Health District wrote, “The books are a wonderful way to promote early learning, enjoy special time together, and foster healthy parent child relationships and healthy child development.”

“We have shared stories about the reception the books get and how little kids like to have the books read to them over and over. These anecdotes help give students an understanding of the validity of what they have accomplished,” added Wilson. Community response to “Possible Creature Questions” has led to a second printing so each kindergarten and first grade student in Snohomish County will receive a copy of the book.

Since 1993, the Arts Council of Snohomish County has partnered with Denney Juvenile Justice Center and the Everett School District to offer weekly art classes to incarcerated youth. Classes expanded in 2006 to include the PASS Project (Program Alternative to Secured Sentencing) and now serve as many as 1,400 youths each year. The program utilizes a research based prevention model that focuses on the protective factors of healthy adult to youth bonding, skill building and opportunities for recognition. Each lesson is built around the elements and principles of art; content is varied to meet a range of interests, learning styles and abilities.

This Spring’s Art Tour will be a “feast” of art, with 29 participating studios! That’s 29 unique art shows, open for two weekends, May 1-2 and 8-9 from 10am-5pm. Visitors can see a plethora of playful garden art, blown glass (you can try it yourself!), fused glass and stained glass, jewelry, handcrafted wooden spoons, tables and toys, beeswax candles (with Ukranian egg decorating demonstrations!), pottery and tiles, botanically inspired prints, incised gourds, photographs, sculptures, and paintings in oil, watercolor, acrylic, and wax encaustic.

Seattle, WA. (April 1, 2010)- ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery announces a new exhibition, The Likeness of Form, running April 25 through May 22, 2010. The Likeness of Form is an exhibition about human nature where artists Janet Marcavage, Nancy Angermeyer and Michelle Templeton examine who "the other" is.

Michelle Templeton's work focuses around human gesture and shape derived from significant personal moments of her life. Templeton doubles as an editor for a University Psychology publication, and her fastidious observation of human behavior is essential to the scope of her work. She also brings these skills of perception to the canvas using paint and brush.

Janet Marcavage's work addresses the properties of the body and current issues in genetics through printmaking, papermaking and installation. Using colored dots and embossing techniques similar to the visual display of molecular DNA coding, Marcavage expresses a correlation between the changes in science and how we see ourselves. Marcavage is also the assistant professor of Printmaking at the University of Puget Sound .

Fine Art Photographer, Nancy Angermeyer, draws from classical Greek form and surrealism for her inspiration. Angermeyer's movement-based photographs are ethereal and sometimes eerie, but always beautiful representations of the human figure. Angermeyer is a native of Wisconsin and holds an MFA in painting from the University of Kentucky . Currently, she lives and works as an artist in Vancouver , BC .

The Likeness of Form will showcase all three artists in their interpretation of our species with a broad brush - from the precise details of our DNA, to the mythic beginnings of Greek art and culture, to recognizing the unrecognized moments of our daily lives. Art Access & Scene In Seattle BIG Announcement

A few weeks ago I shared some news with you about an exciting new collaboration that Art Access has developed with Scene in Seattle. I hope you’ve had time to take a look at the beta version of the new Art Access website. We’ll be officially launching it to the world in just a few days!  

The new website includes many of the features you’ve come to trust from Art Access, plus a whole lot more. We’ve designed it to be a comprehensive source for Northwest art information that includes exhibition listings, artist images, maps, searchable data bases, live news feeds and promotional videos. The result is a fantastic site that positions Art Access and Scene in Seattle as the clear leaders for information about the Northwest art scene.

Teatro ZinZanni and SIFF

In an effort to expand the reach of our message and present art to a larger audience, Art Access is also collaborating with Teatro ZinZanni and Seattle International Film Festival. The first event is coming up soon--please join Caffe Umbria and Art Access as Teatro ZinZanni presents "A Feast of Fools" on Thursday, April 1, 6:30-8:30 P.M. at Caffe Umbria, 320 Occidental Avenue South in Seattle. Scene In Seattle: You used to have two locations, what made you decide to focus on West Seattle?

Twilight Artist Collective: In order to answer this question let me give you the brief history of Twilight. We started out in Pike Place Market in January of 2005. We then spent the next three years developing our collective family and business in our DownUnder gallery. In the beginning of 2008, we were ready to take Twilight to the next level and create the multi-use space we were interested in providing both our artists and the community. After a few months of sweating away, we had finished completely resurfacing what had formerly been a Bubble Tea joint into our new gallery; Twilight Artist Collective in the West Seattle Junction was born. Bravo! Then the economy tanked. Dun dun dun dun.... We began to work harder than ever to make things continue to float with a lack of budget and man power. In March of 2009, we made a big decision to move up to a smaller space on the main level of the market in hopes that the greater traffic would give Twilight the commerce it deserved.
It didn't take long for us to realize that Twilight in the Market had run it's coarse, that we had actually outgrown it, and that the answer was to downsize back into one space and keep all of our energy consolidated in the Junction. This is what we did with complete confidence in September 2009!
SIS: What do you think draws people to West Seattle's Art Walk?
TWAC: West Seattle is a self-sufficient community full of loyal members, made up largely of artists, families and middle class folks. Many people are conservationists as well. What this leaves is a group of people who are interested in sustainable community and owning things with a heart that are not disposable.

West Seattle didn't have an art walk until a few years ago, but the community was ready for it. It's always an opportunity to get out and see new art, but also an opportunity to mingle and expose your kids, friends or families to something interesting that's happening right in your own neighborhood... plus, all the complimentary refreshments are a delicious bonus!
SIS: Which of your artists should we be watching right now?

TWAC: We've been feeling for some time now that two of our artists, Michelle Anderst and Chris Crites are on the verge of really blowing up. The both poses three things that we think are crutial for any artist to "make it big": First and foremost, they are both genius artists. Additionally, they are a proactive part of the local art community, and just as importantly they are both great business people.

SIS: What do you look for when selecting artists for exhibition?

TWAC: We are looking for things that are new. "Fresh, funky, urban" is how we phrase it. We want things that are contemporary but not lacking in skill, conceptual, innovative, interesting, challenging or just plain beautiful. The art we choose evokes something in the viewer. We also focus on carrying artists that are relatively unknown. This is important to us because there are so many local galleries that cater to professional artists, but the galleries for people who are new to the art world are very limited. Part of our mission has always been to create a place for artists to learn how to be in the business, gain exposure, and network with other local artists.

SIS: We’ve heard you’re a big advocate for the arts at West Seattle Summerfest, what is it you guys do with them?

TWAC: Two years ago we developed an idea with the team that produces Summerfest. The problem was that like many community festivals, Summerfest was getting saturated with import vendors, real estate, window treatment and other uninteresting booths. As I said before, West Seattle is a strongly bonded group of people who all have a shared stake in preserving the community and it's unique aspects. The community was asking for more of a local taste in the festival. We decide to host a sort of flea market for artists called "Art Dive". For two years now Art Dive has successfully provided an affordable space for artists to set up for three days, thus enriching the festival itself by infusing it with a mass of varied handmade local art.

SIS: In addition, we see you guys down in Georgetown for Art Attack. How did you get started down there?

TWAC: Georgetown is a fabulous little neighborhood that houses some of the best fringe-society folks in town. Full of punks, bikers, artists, musicians and blue collar workers, these people have the opportunity to dwell in old houses and warehouses that have been hacked and modified making perfect workspaces and nests for creativity. The community is unique and strong. We have been participating by hosting one night only shows at the Georgetown Stables for the past year. This venue provides the opportunity for multi media shows, live music and performance art. We are also a part the United Artists of Georgetown council. This council was formed at the beginning of 2009, and collectively facilitates the planning and execution of large events like Artopia, as well as small endeavors within the community.

SIS: How does an artist get involved with Twilight?

TWAC: Anyone interested in getting involved with Twilight Artist Collective should first come into the gallery, to our events, and to our website to get a feel for what we are doing. SIS: What are you most excited about in 2010?

TWAC: We are excited about everything in 2010. The last few years have been extremely hard, resulting in huge amazing growth for our family, and in Twilight as a business. Seattle Weavers’ Guild Annual Show and Sale

Seattle, WA – The Seattle Weavers’ Guild annual show and sale will be Thursday, October 22, 2009 through Saturday, October 24, 2009 on the lower level, Bloedel Hall, St. Mark’s Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave. E., Seattle.

The sale will showcase one-of-a-kind hand-crafted items, including towels, rugs, blankets, tapestries, exquisite jewelry, accessories for pets, children’s items, handmade cards, woven paper art, household goods, hats, bags, wall art, jackets, scarves, wraps, batik and shibori decorative items, sculptural basketry, handspun hand-dyed yarns along with weaving and spinning tools. There will be daily demonstrations of weaving and spinning. Proceeds from the sale are used to fund the guild’s volunteer outreach program and to bring talented practicing artists to Seattle Weavers' Guild to educate both its members and the public in their art. Parking is free.
